Cape Horn, at the very southern tip of Chile and of the American continent, is located on one of the Wollaston Islands, which are part of the archipelago of Tierra del Fuego. Since remote sailing times it has been the most fearsome and impressive among all coastal remarkable points of all five continents. The area is one of the 482 privileged places in the world, which were declared “World’s Nature Reserve”.
Rounding Cape Horn is to sailors what climbing Mount Everest is to mountaineers: the utmost trophy to reach. The wild and defiant weather and sea conditions of the mythical area, with quickly changing, mostly very strong winds, where rain, snow and hail mix in the fury of the ocean, make it an appealing personal challenge for sailors to reach Cape Horn and to have a tale to tell their life long.
As one of the most symbolic challenge, Cape Horn is included as a key passage in some of the world’s most impressive races: Vendee Globe, Volvo Ocean Race, Barcelona World Race and others. Now, our “Cape Horn Challenge” is joining the list, an event hosted by our Nautical Sports School and Club of Puerto Williams “CEDENA PW”, a non-profit foundation, whose mission is to contribute to young people’s education through their participation in nautical sports, and which benefited up to now more than 500 children between 7 and 17 years old.
Being in close contact with all the many sailors from all over the world who stopover at Puerto Williams each summer, the idea came up in 2019 to organize a “Rally for Cruisers”, a stage regatta open to boats above 30 ft, starting and finishing at Puerto Williams and with the main objective to sail around the mythical Cape Horn.
By now the third edition of our “Cape Horn Challenge” is planned from February 12 to
February 20 2021 and there’s already a lot of interest for it: several enthusiastic sailors from all horizons have confirmed their intention to participate in this great challenge at the end of the world.

Cape Horn Challenge Regatta

CEDENA Puerto Williams organizes the first international regatta to Cape Horn in 2019, with the important support of the Chilean Navy.
Seven sailboats, with crews from France, the United States, Holland, England, Argentina, Brazil, Poland, Canada, Spain, Germany, Japan and of course Chile, wrote history by competing in this great nautical event, sailing from the famous Micalvi Dock in Puerto Williams to the mythical Cape Horn.

In 2020 the second edition again aroused the interest of sailors from many parts of the world. The participation doubled, with 17 sailboats enrolled, 14 finally racing under flags of Canada, the United States, Brazil, Argentina, Spain, France, Poland and of course Chile, and with local nationals taking the first places, as in the first edition.

Participants to the 2nd edition in February 2020

Sailors from all over the world are already interested in taking part in the third edition of this important nautical event organized by Chileans at the southern end of the world. As an important actor of our “Cape Horn Challenge” the Chilean Navy is providing protection and security to the participants, as they do throughout the year for all sailors in the huge national maritime territory of the south-eastern Pacific and Antarctic oceans.
